Assessing Growing Birds
One of the challenges to moving your breeding program ahead is assessing the growing flock. All too often we fall into the trap of “just winging it” where a more scientific method would definitely make the job easier.
Below is a form used for evaluating Buckeye chicks as they are growing out. This form is very effective for the Buckeye, but not cover the items for your breed. You are encouraged to use this format to develop your own template for evaluating growing stock.
A footnote to this article would be to encourage you to use this form for each assessment of the growing flock. For example, if your form had a column for wing band or other specific chick identifier, then you could track its progress. After all, a bird that is “wide” at a month might be deficient at 6 months.
